Mate

The Mate is second in command to the Master and is responsible for deck operations, maintaining a navigation watch and for assisting in handling lines, wires, and towing tackle for the tug and its tow. Certifications required for the position include a Watchkeeping Mates certificate, all Marine Emergency Duty courses including C and D, a Senior Officers' courses, Marine Advanced First Aid and a Transport Canada Medical. Applicants must also have barge towing and/or log towing experience and knowledge of the BC coastline, including Vancouver Harbour and the Fraser River.

Good interpersonal skills are needed to effectively handle the tug, its tow and other assist tugs, and to communicate with the Master and crew on how to best manage the work. The Mates position is required to operate heavy machinery such as winches, cranes and boom boats. The Mate must be able to direct and use all safety and fire fighting equipment on the tug.

Ongoing renewal of safety related courses, upgrading certificates as required by Transport Canada and staying current with changing technology is expected.
