Working under the Supervision of the Master, the Deckhand performs deck duties on the tug and on the vessels being towed. They are required to handle deck lines, wires, and towing tackle for both the tug and tow. The Deckhand may be working with many barges during a shift and as such the position is physically demanding. There also may be limited duties in the engine room and the position may be required to chip and paint the vessel. Certifications required for the Deckhand position include a Marine Emergency Duties Level A1 and a Transport Canada Medical Certificate. The Deckhand must be able to take direction and properly use all safety and fire fighting equipment on the tug.
